Met de herbestemming van het Chinees Paviljoen neemt Leopoldsburg haar verantwoordelijkheid bij het herwaarderen en heroriënteren van haar historisch patrimonium. Ligging en uitstraling waren hierin zeker geen ondergeschikte keuzes, maar het besef van het belang van de historiek van deze plek heeft de eerste gedachten van dit project mee op het spoor gezet. Geen toekomst zonder een duurzame toekomst. De herbestemming op zich kadert hierin, maar ook alle verdere bouwkundige en technische ingrepen. Het Chinees Paviljoen wordt integraal gerenoveerd en ingericht tot toeristisch onthaal en ontvangst voor het belevingsmuseum. Een eerste inleiding in de verhalenlijn zal ongetwijfeld (toevallige) bezoekers prikkelen om Leopoldsburg, haar geschiedenis en het museum verder te ontdekken. De museale verhalenlijn komt tot volle ontwikkeling in de nieuwe vleugel. De architectuur en de sequenties van ruimtes ondersteunen de scenografie en verankeren deze plek definitief in haar geschiedenis. De confrontatie met het paviljoen creëert een spanningsveld tussen heden en verleden, tussen hoop en wanhoop. De donkere zijde in het aanschouw van de begraafplaatsen absorbeert ieder geloof in de toekomst. De reflecterende zijde confronteert ons als individu in ons bestaan van vandaag en morgen. Het museum roept ons op tot zelfreflectie. Het helpt ons met andere ogen naar gisteren, vandaag en morgen te kijken.
